there's a strange and awful rupture in the path of birds in flight
I've picked up my pencil many times, but cannot seem to write,
there's a structure to the way we always fight.

Tonight I meet the Devil on a patch of melting ice,
tonight I greet him as a friend, tonight we throw the dice,
tonight I do not know you though you gave me both my eyes,
tonight I am a willing sacrifice.

There's an evil little smell in the mountain air tonight,
there's a feeling of revenge of which I cannot seem to write,
like a huge and spiteful bonfire waiting to ignite,

some knot we neglected to untie?
some pain we couldn't help but hide?

some door we forgot to shut,
some cord we couldn't bear to cut

there's an evil little smell in the mountain air tonight,
there's a strange and awful rupture in the path of birds in flight,
it has dwelt in darkness these long years but now must come to light,
there's an ending to these hallways down which we drag our lives.
